Now listen up, good people: this is serious. All your comments on The Icing On The Cake were lovely, thank you, but they’re starting to go to the Stoic Spouse’s head. He’s even been overheard muttering the phrase ‘fan club’. Ahem, we need to put the brakes on this before it gets out of hand.
Anyway, while the Stoic Spouse keeps the home fires burning (literally: he’s apparently shifted one tonne of newly-delivered logs fromĀ front to back garden whilst we’ve been away), the Toddler Twinnage and I have remained in Herefordshire with the Twisted Seniors (thank you, Contented Crafter, for that inspired name for my parents). We’ve been soaking up the weak autumn sunshine and wondering whether the colours could inspire a yarn combination or two:-
And whilst I’ve knitted and knitted, and knitted a log-cabin blanket for my friend’s imminently-arriving baby, my mum has been renewing her love of log-cabin patchwork. Don’tcha just love a decent log cabin? Look at these beauties:-
There are thirteen pieces sewn together in each patch, like this:-
Here she is, at work:-
Of course, there are so many ways of arranging log cabins. Playing with the squares she’s completed already, I made these patterns (not sewn together yet so of course they don’t look as lovely as they will when finished:-
Can you tell that the finished thing will be beautiful?
gladeridercrafts says
Oh wow, those log cabins really are gorgeous! I love that stripy pattern most of all, but whatever it ends up being will be wonderful!
The Twisted Yarn says
They are beautiful. My mum will make a lovely cushion out of these. š

Pretty, I love the Log Cabins. I’m working on one in denim for my particular pappy(since we’re naming relatives in intriguing manners). I can say no more, as I’m looking at the scraps, thinking I have to lay this out and get this sewn, but I have knitting to do as well and math homework;-). Lovely, and you deserve a small following of flotsam fans for your blooming blog;-)
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you (on my mum’s behalf!) Now log cabins in denim sounds particularly wonderful and intriguing. Do we get to see pictures???
thecontentedcrafter says
You are most welcome š
Aren’t those the most beautiful scenic shots – could be a fairy tale kingdom just round the corner.
But how DO you decide which layout to go with? They are all so attractive and as soon as I chose one another looked just as attractive or maybe even more so – or am I just fickle do you suppose?
Mother Twisted has very beautiful hands – sigh… I am envious!!
The Twisted Yarn says
She does indeed have beautiful hands. š
And at least we won’t have to be the ones making a decision about layout: over to you, Mother Twisted!
Now I’m off to read your beautiful garden post.

New fan club for Mother Twisted too now!

Gorgeous. Talented mother and daughter. One day I hope to try quilting, but am too nervous to begin! Am in awe again. Love the name Twisted Seniors, great! Well done indeed thecontentedcrafte!
The Twisted Yarn says
Oh c’mon, if you tried quilting, you’d make the most amazingly wonderful things. I’ve seen your home and I know how talented you are. š

Loving Twisted Mother’s patchwork. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you (on her behalf!) It’s pretty wonderful.

Beautiful pictures of the view. I do do like the log cabin layout permutations. It will be a beautiful quilt!
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. š

I adore people that can quilt. These Log Cabins are stunning. š
And yet, the Fall colours could definitely inspire yarn combinations.
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. š (Yes, I think my mum is producing something rather special and lovely.)
Den says
I love love love log cabins and those are absolutely lovely. š
(Does your mum strip piece?)
The Twisted Yarn says
Um, I’m not sure. Can I ask her?
Sharon Mann says
Be sure to post the finished quilt. I love the color combinations.
The Twisted Yarn says
I’ll ask her. I’m sure she’ll agree. MUM, ARE YOU READING THIS?!
Val says
That’s a gorgeous quilt! Now, what I’m wondering is what will the Toddler Twinnage become when they’re no longer toddlers?!? (slight panic moment)
The Twisted Yarn says
Actually, I was going to post about that. *whispers* They’re not really toddlers any more. I need help with my alliteration! The Tyrannical Twinnage? The Terrible Twinnage? The Tearaway Twinnage? Any ideas?
Val says
How about Tomfoolery Twinnage? ?

Tell hubby that when he designs, bakes, and decorates the cakes, we will form a fan club. For now he is just a thoughtful keeper. Love, love those quilt blocks. Loving on a log cabin makes that one of my favorite patterns.
The Twisted Yarn says
(Actually, he bakes, too.) š

I like the contrast between the dark and light!
The Twisted Yarn says
Yes, I agree. (And I hope my mum is reading this.)

I spend Mondays with a group of quilters – I haven’t yet started on that slippery slope, generally take either my knitting or my wheel. However I feel I’m getting closer and closer to the edge. I have, however, made a couple of chair pads in knitted log cabin, which was fun. The photos of the different arrangements give a hit of the versatility of this design – and can be replicated in knitting.
The Twisted Yarn says
Sounds as though it’s only a matter of time???
KerryCan says
When I saw the close-up of the log cabin patchwork, I didn’t think I liked it–too busy, too fussy. But the shots of several of them together, from a distance, make it clear how inspired they are! They make me think of a Seurat!
The Twisted Yarn says
Oooh yes, I think you’re right.
Isabel's Needleworks says
Your scenery is out of a story book, I love it !! and your sweet nicknames for family .. I also love log cabin patterns, very pretty colours there and so many possibilities

You must be 14. Your mum has younger hands than I have! š Seriously though, I completely and utterly admire people who can sew. Your mother can obviously sew deliciously. I just inherited an industrial Pfaff that can apparently sew concrete but it’s missing the foot pedal. I might be able to procrastinate about “I would LOVE to learn to sew” for a bit longer now with an excuse (no foot pedal…no work.) whilst inside I quake with fear at the thought of it all. I can admire your mum’s sterling efforts from afar and one day…when my hands are MUCH older than they are now, I am thinking I might take up sewing…
The Twisted Yarn says
I hope you do – I’m sure you would do it beautifully.
Oh, and yes I’m actually a very clever five-year-old writing this blog, and my mum is only 25. š But back on Planet Reality, she has beautiful hands, the lucky woman. And I am a tiny bit older than five.

Beautiful pictures. I love the quilt, I have never heard of log cabins and it looks amazing. I want to try! I think it might be a bit advanced though, I have only ever made one quilt. One day!

My fingers are itching to get back behind a sewing machine, so your photos were quite inspirational. Hope the Stoic Spouse remains manageable after all the compliments!
