…And meanwhile, far in the background, (so very far that it looks a little hazy), the Arne and Carlos blanket swells, garter stitch by easy garter stitch. I just thought I’d give it a teeny bit of blog-space again. ‘Tis my mindless go-to project at 3am when work stress pokes my brain awake, or a twin or two tries to pull my nose off, or some Lego intrudes painfully on my lower vertebrae. I’m disappointed that the blanket isn’t finished yet, because I had visions of the twinnage and I snuggling under it this winter in our ludicrously chilly house, but this enormous piece of blanketry is about 3/4 done: look!

It’s a good project to knit on a cold winter’s day, because you can simultaneously snuggle under it and knit the blighter. And the design is such a simple, clever inspiration of loveliness from the talented Scandinavian duo. Anyway, in my humble opinion, everyone needs a mindless background comfort-project, if only as a little breather from lace-knitting a representation of the rose window of Notre Dame on 1mm needles.
The Toddler Twinnage and I have been alternating between huddling in front of the fire and venturing out to see fields in winter plumage, striped by shadows of the windbreak poplars:-
…with sheep galloping weirdly towards us….
…and horses just visible through the mist…
…Sometimes, the poplar windbreaks filter evening sun quite fetchingly across the fields:-
….and sometimes, we brave the cold to wander amongst the scant remaining cherry orchards round here:-
…despite the fact that the chill visible on neighbouring rooftops doesn’t always make us want to venture outside:-
…But hey-ho, Oxfordshire does crisp winter mornings quite fetchingly, I’ve always thought, like this:-
Stay warm, people.
Stay warm yourself. The A & C blanket looks gorgeous, I am sooo tempted to make one myself this year. You may need to prod me at some point, because I really really really want one, but it’s knitting… and it will take me years… meet up next week perhaps?
Yes please, to the meet-up. Tuesday?
Blimey Twisted, that misty stuff looks bleak and the frosty stuff looks cold! Not the A&C though – it features my very favourite colours front and centre and I start to drool…….. [mind, that could be the age thing]. It is a bit hard to tell where the blanket ends and the half twinnage begins, so it must be quite big! I can see why it is necessary to sip1 from time to time, it is part of the need to keep the internals warm! Keep warm!
Yup, it’s properly cold, but NO SNOW! Grrr. Right now I’m envying your summer just a little. I mean, what’s the point of winter if it doesn’t snow??
I agree! Snow dammit, SNOW!! [Right lets see if me yelling indignantly from the bottom of the globe makes any difference…..]
Yup, it’ll definitely work. *scurries off to peep round curtains* Oh, no snow! Please could you yell louder?
Brrrrr! Come down under – 37 today, hot and humid……I’m aiming to stay cool!
Ooh, I could do with some heat. May I pop in, just for a day? 😉 (But sympathies about the humidity.)
You sure live in an enchanting place. I can almost see the fairies a dancing around or huddling around.
Your blanket is lovely. I’m curious about something, is the garter stitch in rod knitting all knit stitch rows?
The garter stitch in loom knitting is k1 row then purl 1 row, repeat.
It’s interesting the different techniques used in rod knitting and loom knitting.
Hope you and the twinage have many joyous times of snuggling under the new blanket before and after it’s finished. 🙂
Yes, when knitted flat like this, garter stitch is knit stitch all the way. BUT if you knit in the round, you’d have to work alternating rows of knit stitch and purl stitch.
Anyway, thanks for your lovely comments. Yup, you can’t move round here for tripping over fairies. 😉
I hadn’t considered the working in a round of rod knitting. That’s neat to know. Thanks for answering my questions.
And thanks for the fairy smiles. 😉
Can’t wait to see your finished knitted masterpiece and your surrounding enviroment looks so inviting.
Thank you. 🙂 I reckon the blanket will be ready just about round when the weather gets hot next summer. *sighs*
hee hee, the sheep made me laugh – they’re so fat and round! The blanket looks gorgeous and snuggly. Just keep knitting!
I know, I can’t help looking at their fleece with a greedy knitter’s eye…
The blanket is of course stunning, as is everything I’ve seen you do thus far. But alas those pictures do so make me want to drug the husband just long enough to pack up everything we own and move to your neck of the woods. Even the rooftops are romantically pretty. Sadly he would never agree to such a change of scenery unless he were completely unconscious. Maybe once we were all settled and his coffee was brewing he’d never notice we were on the wrong side of the ocean…
That sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. And I’m certain that your husband would understand and see sense once he was here. What can possibly go wrong? That said, I fear I’m misrepresenting our environs slightly, as I’ve omitted the looming power station, and the ordinary-looking town down the road, and….
Very fetching scenery. And the blanket makes a lovely landscape on the floor. 🙂
Muchly thank you.
I laughed when you mentioned knitting and snuggling simultaneously! I’m enjoying the same with a crocheted blanket for my husband… He keeps asking “are you sure it needs to be bigger? “, while I just smirk, wrapped in woolly warmth and reply “Yes. Yes it does”.
Oh yes, it’s so comforting on a winter’s night, isn’t it? I fear your blanket may never stop growing….
Oh how I love mindless projects, although it has to be crochet for me as knitting seems to take sooo much longer. Just finished a blanket and started yet another one that I don’t need…….
That blanket looks lovely! And I totally agree, a mindless project is something you should always have 🙂
Love your pictures, almost make me homesick for the wilds of Yorkshire [particularly the sheep]. However I’m now ensconced in a small log home in the wilds of Norther Michigan – the temperature has warmed UP to a balmy -1.3 F, and there’s a whole bunch of snow out there but the sky is blue, the sun is shining and I’ve lots of stitches on my needle.
Lace knitting a representation of the rose window of Notre Dame on 1 mm needles? I do love the blanket but do tell about this project. I find the idea fascinating.
ME TOO! Do tell 🙂
Damn, did I forget to include that photo?! Oh how silly of me…. I can’t seem to find it on my camera and, era, erm, erm, the light’s no good for taking another one now and……
Lovely photos. However one is missing—“lace-knitting a representation of the rose window of Notre Dame on 1mm needles.” 🙂
Ooh, blanket knitting! I’d forgotten what a good way it is to enjoy knitting and keep warm at the same time. Beautiful photos! …I’m off to find a partially knit blanket…
Love the colors on that blanket. Nice and bright as a winter project should be! And I totally agree about garter stitch projects. I think they’re good for the soul.
“Stay warm people”…NO! I am duty bound to rebel against your instructions Ms Twisted. I just made it through a 20C night in 100% humidity with a hot dog panting next to me all night infusing me with his delightful aroma (forget “wet dog”; “Hot dog” is much more lingering…) and latent heat. I don’t want to keep warm. I want it to rain. And it did. I am now contented :). Knitting you say? Well I am about to crochet me another doll, promised to someone for their little boy who is in need of a dinosaur hunter apparently. Thank goodness for the internet is all I can say! I adore any and everything by that Nordic pair of clever boys. Your blanket is looking sufficiently scrumptious. Its no wonder the toddler twinnage want to play cars on it. It is delightfully straight. Just like a road, and perfect for running toy cars up and down. Please show us when you finish it as something that lovely needs the appropriate “Ta-da!” and for us all to “Oooh” and “AHHH!” over it. It deserves nothing less 🙂
Beautiful picture. I agree, it’s always good to have a go to mindless project on hand, and the blanket will be done whenever it will be done 🙂
Amazing you get so much done with your twinage! Beaytiful photos!
Oh this one made me giggle! And what a beautiful blanket! Not sure I’d be able to hang in there with all those K1’s over and over again. ? super post!
Definitely a cozy project! I love all of your photos! 🙂
