Hello, fibrous friends. How’s the knitting/crochet going?
Whilst I endlessly crochet the tedious back panel of the secret-house-crochet-furniture-related-project, (trust me, I have precisely NOTHING exciting to say about this) may we please address the weighty subject of phones?
Please?
But I must preface this by saying that I am soooo not a techie person, and that this will n-e-v-e-r be a which-tech-device-to-buy blog. OK? Yes? You want to research the latest gizmos? Then look elsewhere, my fine friend, because you’ll uncover no wisdom here.
So… phones. I was at a party recently, and I got chatting to some folks I’d never met before. It was a warm evening, and everyone was sitting out on the lawn drinking wine and eating yumptious Zimbabwean barbeque. The people I was talking to seemed nice. But then one of them noticed my phone lying on the grass. (I’m just about enough of a 21st century lass to have my phone beside me at all times, always slightly to the left.) And suddenly he said, “Oh! Your phone! I love it: it’s so vintage.”
The phone in question looks like this, in case you’re curious:-

That rankled. Because I’d hate, hate, hate to think that I’d become in any way technologically hip. I was much more at ease with the reaction of a long-term friend at a recent dinner party who saw my phone and shrieked, “What the hell is that monstrosity?” Ahhhhhhhhhhh, balm to my ears: I’m not trendy. (I love my friend.)
I’d been holding out as almost-the-only-person-I-knew-without-a-smartphone. But that admiring remark did for me. I was off shopping. And so I’ve finally acquired a smartphone (not saying which one, because this ain’t a techie blog – what, you mean you could tell?) But all this talk of apps on this blog recently: that’s because of the smartphone. Grr.
(To new readers, this is primarily a knitting/crochet blog, honest, but these past few days, there’s been a lull in the yarn-related bloggable material because:-
- I’ve been a tad busy finishing off the final final FINAL FINAL edits to my novel-writing masters degree before submission.
- I designed something new. I knitted it. And then the Stoic Spouse’s reaction was luke-warm, which made me wonder whether it needs more work before I tell you about it. I’m still pondering.
- The write-up on the house-bag pattern is nearly done, but I’m still working. And the big housey crochet furniture-related project is nearly done. Can’t wait to ta-da that one on you.
- Minor start-of-the-academic-year seasonal cold has this evening morphed into full-on stinker of a lurgy. Think pretty-much-bubonic-plague, and you won’t be far off. Histrionically melodramatic, moi?)
I still have a stupid phone and I’m not trendy
I like you. 🙂
I sypathise with the non-techiness, my hubby is never happy until he has the latest version of phone or computer gadget. You should have seen his face when I recently suggested that I wanted to ditch my mobile altogether!
Ah, well, I regret to inform you about something about your phone….. I don’t have a smartphone either, or even a camera on my phone! I am proud of it!!! Guess what my phone does. It makes telephone calls! That is it! I cannot imagine what your friends would make of that! xx
my phone is vintage as well…I call it the smart phone before the smart phones upgraded…It’s there, but it does just enough to get me in trouble…it doesn’t do apps. I like that. And the fall crud is going around…ugh…I feel ya.
My daughter [who never recovered from my ‘lost in Dulles Airport’ situation] recently upgraded me to a really quite clever phone and it has changed my life – and removed me from the so-old-it’s-in-again list. I can play ‘Words with Friends’ while the puppy charges around the dog park chasing starlings and seagulls ……. My crochet is coming along quite nicely thanks for asking 🙂 Get well, I’m still hanging in for the secret project…….
My phone is old, too, but I don’t use all its features, much less the ones on the smart phones on offer. Get well soon. I’m eager to see the house furniture crochet project!!!
OK, I finally let my ancient phone go last year and got a smart phone. Wow. I can go to Revelry, do grocery coupons, navigate with GPS, send cat pictures to my family, and post comments to blogs. ? Hope you like it once you get comfortable in your new phone home.
I can totally sympathize with you about that- I am a very happy geek. Why on earth did it have to become a trendy thing to be?!?
I understand the technological reticence ?I recently purchased a tablet to facilitate on the go pattern reading and writing
my brother has an even older phone and I love teasing him about it, I wish I hadn’t stumbled into smart phones really because I know what you mean too many apps and pressure and blahblahblah. but now I have one, I couldn’t manage without – whats up with that?
anyways – you sound SUPER busy I hope its not all too tiring or anything! really can’t wait to see the big crochet house reveal, and best best bets of luck for finishing your masters’ stuff! jenny xxx
I only upgrade my phone when I absolutely must. For example, when my carrier sends me a letter through snail mail that my phone will no longer work with their new improvements. Then I go into the store and let the tech wizards behind the counter do their thing until they are completely besides themselves with all the new phone can do. That’s when I ask the one important question: Can it make a phone call?
Oh, I had a feeling all along we were twin souls! (Speaking for myself, at least). I also had an old Nokia till about 5 minutes ago (a little older even – not bragging, though). Actually the biographical dittos don’t end there… So apparently, you can tell a person by their phone 🙂
Your phone is our phone from 2 phones ago. I can’t work out how to make a phone call on our new phone. I wish we had stayed with the old one. Hopefully the plague settles down into a tasteful smattering of bubules in the near future and allows you to finish that (sodding) lovely crochet project. Before you revise your new pattern you need to ask yourself a few questions about stoic spouses responses:
1. Was he watching television at the time
2. Was he trying to work out how to use the new phone at the time
3. Was he eating, playing with the twinage, standing on his head, reading a thesis on the ischial callosities of baboons?
4. Is the new pattern something to do with “women’s undergarments”?
5. Were ANY of his friends within 3 miles of him at the time?
If you ticked “yes” to any of the above, you need to ignore his past comment and ask him again (or just ignore it if it was about “women’s crochet undergarments” as he is NEVER going to get excited about them 😉 )
I am a self admitted Geek. I love your projects and look forward to reading your blog
I had the exact same model phone as you until this summer. Got a smart phone now and the only “smart” things I use it for, is to read blogs when in the park. And the only apps I have are games for the kids, weather, national trust and geo cacheing. I don’t think any of the above equate to trendy, well I hope not anyway. Love the knitting and I wish my colour work would just lie flat never mind be as gorgeous as yours.
I finally had to break down and “upgrade” to a new phone – I hate the fact that I have a phone that’s smarter than I am! Miss my little flip phone, although the new one does take wonderful photos. 🙂
When I was working, I went to a meeting and made notes in a notebook (the paper kind). A young woman in there (with an electronic notepad!) squealed with excitement at my “vintage” book. I thought she was a lone loon… Apparently not!
