So, I’m embroidering and crocheting the garden of the big furniture-related crochet house project, when I really ought to be doing proper useful stuff. The fire is lit already because it’s been one of those grey, drizzly mornings that makes you think, “Really? Do I have to get up and adult today? Again?”
I decided to build a rockery around the pond. First, I made some rocks in subtly variegated grey yarn, by single-crocheting (that’s double crochet in UK parlance) with strategic increases and decreases.
And then I sewed them on to the crochet garden.
Next, I added in some soil around them. I’ve run out of that lovely rich brown that I used for the background, so I had to resort to a lighter brown. I hooked and hooked hither and thither around the rocks, deliberately creating an uneven texture. The paler colour won’t show up so much once it’s all covered in plants.
Ah, speaking of plants, I took inspiration from a gardening book. Here is some helianthemum (in case that wasn’t blindingly obvious):-
My centrathus ruber was less convincing, though, wouldn’t you say?
I’m not quite sure yet what this plant will be:-
But the area around the pond is really beginning to take shape, now.
I’m basing the rockery on this book:-
…Now if only the real outdoor garden was as easy to create as the crochet garden, I’d be happy indeed…

I can not wait to see this finished project and can’t help but wonder if it isn’t a Christmas gifty for the twinnage.

I must guiltily confess that it’s not a present specifically for them, although they do enjoy watching it evolve. They’re far more interested in knitted dinosaurs etc.

I’m trying to get it FINISHED, I really am. Of course after such a build-up, everyone’s reaction is going to be, “What? Is that IT?”

Another great idea. It’s coming on beautifully.
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. It’s getting embarrassing to mention that it’s not yet done, though.

I am so impressed with your endurance and creativity. Looking forward to seeing the final result.
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. It is getting a little ridiculous…

I love the way this is shaping up – rocks are different colours anyway, so I would say the vari-coloured yarn is fine. It’s great you’re allowing yourself time to be so creative!
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. I was aiming for limestone, but the rocks came out a little too rounded and pebbly. Maybe limestone boulders from the beach?

Er. I refuse to answer your Centrathus ruber query on the grounds that I am a horticulturalist and what came out of my mouth might incriminate me ;). That plant shall be “Purest Green”. A mix of knit and hook, that garden of mystery promises to be a masterpiece heirloom. It’s beautiful, quirky, finicky and a little bit difficult. I am guessing the creator of this magnificent piece is rather like her creation. You constantly have me in awe at your talented endeavors Ms Twisted. I am out of my comfort zone in being so complementary, but this deserves my A game for “nice” comments. I bow to your talent.
The Twisted Yarn says
I do realize that nobody with any serious horticultural knowledge is going to look at this project with any respect at all. …And just to forewarn you, you’ll probably look at attempts to redevelop our real back garden with a similar level of derision. But thank you for your kind words. I Need To Get This Thing FINISHED.

Sword of Damacles? Twas joking about the Centrathus ruber (had to look up what you were talking about THAT’S how good a horticulturalist I am 😉 )

Thank you! (Although I do think that the word you’re looking for is ‘ridiculous’!)

Creeping Jenny. For the plant-that-does-not-yet-have-a-name rather than my new-and-slightly-unsettling-Internet-pseudonym.
Your garden is smashing!

Thank you! Thank you!

I adore your creativity – esp. that green that you don’t know what is or will be – isn
‘t that thrilling, to just allow it to come forth and LIVE 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. It is a little crazy, though. I just hope that the finished thing isn’t a massive disappointment to everyone after all this build-up!
leelah saachi says
As long as you feel alive doing it, I think you could happily let that be enough.I wouldn’t be surprised if your readers agree

I look forward to seeing this masterpiece when you finish:)

Thank you! I hope it’ll happen this side of the next millennium…

Looking good, but I STILL WANNA KNOW WHAT IT IS. This is the internet darn it, we expect instant gratification. What’s with all this keeping us waiting malarky, like you’re hand crafting it or something. Just photoshop and be done with it. (I’m going to add a smiley face now, which is not really my style, but just in case anyone doesn’t realise I’m joshing and tells me off 😉 )

Oh this is just about the coolest thing ever! I can’t wait to see the whatever it is going to be!
