If you’re reading this before noon on the 22nd April, there’s still time to enter the most marvellous SereKNITy giveaway! It’s open worldwide. 🙂

And in other news, I’ve finished making the crochet version of The Hiking Reindeer cowl. (Here’s the pattern for the knit version.) But it’s definitely a moose. The Hiking Moose. Look!
As for why a moose would be hiking over the rolling hills of southern England at dusk, I have no clue: it must have been a really long hike from Canada. I’m just photographing the cowl and writing up the pattern, and then I’ll pop it on here in case any of you want to make one.
This has certainly provided a good illustration of the differences between knitted and crocheted fabric. Same yarns (Stylecraft Head Over Heels ‘Etna’ and Stylecraft Life in ‘Black’), similar(ish) patterns:-
The knitted version is softer and more flexible/stretchy. But the colours seem more vivid in the crochet version, because the stitches are tighter and knottier.
Anyway, the pattern will be landing on your screen within the next week or so.
And for those of you who’ve been reading a’while, there’s been a little progress in my attempts to build a small circular reclaimed-brick patio. So where exactly do I collect my award for Person-Least-Likely-To-Successfully-Undertake-A-Building-Project? Look, it’s nearly done!
The barren twig standing beside it will one day be laden with cherry blossom, and the earth around it will next year be a mass of blooming bulb-life. There’ll also be an unnecessarily-ornate wrought iron bench on which to sit and knit/crochet.
So that, my fine and fibrous friends, is one of the reasons why I haven’t posted The Hiking Moose as yet. One of the reasons. The other reason involves my so-called ‘friends’ talking me into buying some truly crazy novelty yarn and knitting with it, but that’s a story for another post… a post entitled ‘Why I’m No Longer On Speaking Terms With My Evil Ex-Friends’.
Both are beautiful, but I think the crochet moose looks moose-ier. I can’t wait to make one! Thank you so much!!
Oh dear. That’s one heck of a way to be dumped as a friend. Via a blog post!
But yes, I’ll put my hands up, it is slightly eccentric yarn. And we did throw out a few “imaginative” ideas about what you might make. But I could’ve sworn that you were about to buy it and do something crazy even without our, ahem, suggestions… 😉
Love your patio, and the vision of the cherry tree in bloom with tulips and daffodils all around while you sit and knit or have a bit of tea…. oh I do hope you’ll take a picture of you next Spring and share it with us.
I like seeing the comparison, close up and from afar. My knitting friends, my crochet friends, and my crochet/knitting friends (yes, there are such animals…I am one) will enjoy talking about this together. I’m sure everyone will be talking at once.
These are so pretty, you have me tempted to buy the yarn…but the stash is growing out of control and knitting time has been limited this week….
Sorry I doubted that you could make a circular out of bricks! Bravo!! You did it!!
Look at this post. A circular patio and two collars, wow. It was so worth the waiting. I don’t know about those friends but I wouldn’t give up on anyone buying yarn with me.
Of course knitted socks would look good in the that yarn too with moose!
Gosh you have such terrible friends. You should definitely lose them and get a new set 😉
Now I want to learn to knit even more – I love ‘same but different’ things and I’d love to make a knitted and a crochet version! But for now I’m super looking forward to the crochet version
How lucky you are to have such amazing friends who encourage you to put your skills to something a little ‘different’!
Looking forwards to seeing this crazy project! (You weren’t the only one buying weird yarn!)
You have mad skills, my friend. Knitting, crocheting, pattern design and now patio-brick-laying. They’re all stunning in their own right. I really enjoyed seeing the same pattern put together in two different ways, too. No moss gathering under your hands or feet. Impressive!
There is certainly a lot going on at Chez Twisted at the moment. As someone who is completely unable to multitask the layers of this post are dizzying. Kudos Ms T and looking forward to having a go at the moose pattern 🙂
I love how you have converted the pattern, looks great in both techniques!
What a cute moose! Would look great on my over here in Canada!
I’ve already got this pattern queued! Super cute, great idea 🙂
The crochet version of this cowl is just as amazing as the knitted one! I look forward to seeing your finished patio <3
