I have a free scarf pattern for you, ably modelled by my headless friend:-
But first, may I briefly direct your attention to the TV? That’s not a sentence that I write very often (I don’t even own a television). But tonight, my chair and I are appearing on the BBC programme, ‘Make’.
The (brief) interview was filmed last October, and I blogged about it here. (And I blogged about the chair here, in case you’re curious.) The programme will be on BBC4 at 9pm UK-time tonight. Given my lack of TV, I’m planning to take up a position behind the sofa at my friend’s house, and occasionally peep over the top to see how embarrassing it all is. Fortunately, my friend is a tolerant sort of person.
But let’s get back to the scarf. A while ago, my Mum requested a knitted hat to go with her red coat, and since there’s only a meagre choice of 70 000 hat patterns on Ravelry, I realized that I’d need to design one. I wrote it up as a free pattern, here. But a hat needs an accompanying scarf, really, doesn’t it? So I tried to work out what sort of thing my Mum might like.
It’s knitted in the round, then the ends are grafted closed. This has the advantages that (i) there’s no purling for the stranded section, and (ii) it makes a double-thick, snuggly scarf.
I just hope that she’ll like it.

It’s a gorgeous one just like the hat. Will suit her red coat perfect. As I child I had a scarf just like it. Because it was knitted in round I could pull it over my head and still wear it like a scarf around my neck. Very warm.
The Twisted Yarn says
Your childhood scarf sounds lovely!

Forgot to say I love that little seagull on the top of the chair, never noticed it before <3
The Twisted Yarn says
Thanks – it’s looking a bit wonky these days!

Just want to let you know how much I enjoy your blog! You are so Alive with Ideas! And your writing is light and fun, I feel like I’m sitting in the room with you.
The scarf and hat set are lovely. I’m envisioning your design at the lower edge of a cardigan in the same colors.
Your chair just cries out to be loved by all, it is so very charming ❤️
The Twisted Yarn says
Gosh, thank you for such a generous comment. And yes – I see what you mean about the motif on a cardigan. ☺
Mother Twisted says
A cardigan sounds a very good idea…… Thank you so much for the lovely scarf.

What a brilliant idea: knitting a scarf in the round and grafting the ends! I shall remember it when my Christmas knitting binge begins and my family members in Maine, USA await my goodies. Thanks, as always.

I’ve just seen you on the BBC4 programme and your wonderful chair. I wanted to jump up and say I know that lady. Your blogs seem so personal and always make me smile. Thank you.
The Twisted Yarn says
Aww, thank you! There may be more later in the programme. I’m just hiding behind my friend’s sofa, waiting to see.
pixiemumblog says
Wow, you came over so well, wish the interview had been longer, you need a programme to yourself to show detail of how you transformed the chair.
The Twisted Yarn says
Eek, thank you! I’m not sure whether there’ll be more, later in the programme.
Lenore says
Love the scarf – I think have at last found the pattern for a skirt. I’m not sure how many stitches but I’m sure something on a google search will let me know. What a great outfit, matching beanie, scarf and skirt. Thank you for the free pattern. X

I actually shouted at my TV “oh my goodness its Twisted Yarn”, my family need no further convincing of my daftness. The chair and the scarf are naturally a joy

You did us knitter’s proud on the telly last night. Well done.

I loved your appearance. I’m just sorry it wasn’t for longer or had more depth to it…..
(Watching the programme but I had to disagree with the cross stitch tutor man, save far more thread by going up a row then back down doing the crosses, but I’m getting nit-picky and if his method encourages people to cross stitch, then it’s a great thing!)
Please let us know when you’re next appearance is on.
