The Katia Azteca has arrived! Wheeee! It feels surprisingly light and soft. But I chose it because of its rich colour variegation... and the need to not spend completely insane amounts on yarn that is, after all, just for a picture. So now I can begin the header for this blog. Today I knitted a quick swatch - nothing to do with gauge because it's not as though I'll be wearing the thing - but I was worried about whether background and foreground are sufficiently in contrast. All I can say is... Continue Reading
Seasonal perplexity
Yes, this blog really is primarily about knitting/crochet for my home, but it's taking (too) many days to knit/crochet us and our converted brewery house. Please bear with me. Housey finished objects will start appearing soon. But the twinnage needs some clothes:- Also, the Katia Azteca for the blog header still hasn't arrived. In the meantime, I offer you some non-knitty vegetative houseyness. We've got vegetative seasonal perplexity disorder here, and we've got it bad. Examples: Continue Reading
Stash
Now, I'm about to write something that will alienate about 105% of the fibre community. Please don't hate me. I'm fairly nice, really. You might even like me if we met at a party. Here's the thing, though: I don't understand the concept of stash. No, that wasn't a typo. I meant it. I. Don't. Understand. Stash. Yes, yarn is beautiful. Yarn is lovely. Yarn is squishable. Yarn is comforting. Yarn inspires possibilities. And yes, if someone popped round tomorrow to fill my house with Continue Reading
Work: another world
When not exploring with sticks 'n' string or twin-wrangling, I'm a clinical psychologist on an acute ward (the psychiatric equivalent of A&E - that's ER in North American parlance I think?) Truly, it's another world. A very sobering world, that makes me feel guilty for writing such a frivolous blog. But is it entirely frivolous? True, I joke and play here, but there's a serious side too. Many of us (me included) are profoundly affected by our environments. A hint of growth, a touch of Continue Reading
Self-portrait in yarn
I've been busy. Not busy doing the sensible things that I ought to be doing you understand, but busy with sticks and string. The 'about' page on this blog needs some pictures doesn't it? Just to give you an idea of what I, and Mr TwistedYarn and the twinnage, and this crazy house actually look like. But I'm slightly wary of posting photos of all of us, so I came up with an alternative idea: I'll knit us! It's taking a while, though, hence my silence for the last few days. So far, I've managed a Continue Reading
A small diversion
A small diversion from knitting and crochet, today. The twinnage and Mr TwistedYarn and I went for an autumnal wander. Actually it's not properly autumnal here quite yet. Some of the trees have turned, most are still green, so walking around you can see every shade of yellow, orange, red, brown and green. Nature never gets it wrong, colourwise, does she? Never looks dated, never clashes. Here are some of the leaves scrunched underfoot by the twinnage:- Rich autumn shades are the ones I Continue Reading
Plant life
Sometimes a girl just needs to knit some ferns. This is the story of a late Victorian box settle. I give you exhibit A:- 'Tis a popular piece of furniture in our house. The twinnage pats the carved lions' heads and practise roaring. Mr TwistedYarn dumps his legal files on it to a depth of three feet. And I sit on it and contemplate things. It needs a cushion though, doesn't it? So I'm knitting. I found a lovely design on Ravelry: Continue Reading
Setting up home
And so, I've moved in. To this blog, I mean. Looking around, it's a bit spartan, isn't it? I haven't had a chance to unpack yet, or make it homely, but that will come. I hung that picture of my knitted bracken leaves up because it was all I had to hand. Now, I need to find my way around, and work out how to make the best of my new home. It doesn't look much, but the agent said it's got potential. Meanwhile, the decorators are in. Well actually it's just me. I've got my needles and hooks and Continue Reading
