Fancy another free pattern? Yes?
OK, but before I reveal all, may I just thank you from the very bottom left corner of my heart for the generous comments that you left regarding the chair. However, I am deeply aggrieved that you’ve all sided with Stoic Spouse about whether or not anyone should sit in the thing.
The twinnage certainly can’t be kept away. Here’s one young man and his car park:-
In all the excitement of the chair, I didn’t get a chance to tell you about another project – one that you might actually want to make. Take a look at this cowl:-
The design came about after I was contacted by Hobbycraft (the major UK craft store chain) and asked to design something for their website. That was last autumn. And with my usual combination of optimism and stupidity, I set to work designing an autumnal project… which was ready shortly after Christmas.
So allow me to introduce the Falling Leaves cowl. The FREE pattern is published on the Hobbycraft website, right HERE.
It’s a stranded knit, but because there are some crazy-long floats, I’ve suggested an alternative way of trapping them.
Talking of cowls, Rainbow Junkie (love the name) has made a beautiful jewel-coloured version of my All That Jazz cowl. Her rather gorgeous version is here on her blog. I love it!

In all my years of knitting, I’ve never knitted a cowl. Looks like your pattern will give me the needed incentive!

I know our been a while since you posted this pattern, but it’s so pretty! The link is broken(or the discussion site is gone). Any way we could regain access? Thank you for your work!
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Maggie, and thank you so much for your interest. The pattern is now here: https://thetwistedyarn.com/2021/11/27/the-leaves-have-fallen-and-the-free-cowl-pattern-is-here/

Gorgeous! I already have one cowl planned, now it looks like it’ll have a friend!!! Or maybe I could get away with giving it to my dad…hmm…
The Little Farmhouse1 says
That is beautiful!
Rainbow Junkie says
The colours work well together to give a great autumnal look!
Postcard from Gibraltar says
That’s got to be the most amazing toy car park in the world! Love your cowl ?
PrettyPotato says
This really makes me want to learn how to knit! It’s beautiful!

What weight of yarn is this, please? I love the cowl! In US, I checked link, but couldn’t figure it out.
The Twisted Yarn says
It’s double knit, which is at the boundary of sport and worsted weight. Hope this helps!
Frances says
This is beautiful! A query: do you know if the chart link is missing from the hobbycraft website? All the instructions are there, but the only chart images are tiny.
As a shuffler-through-leaves I would love to make this cowl!
The Twisted Yarn says
Eek yes, it does seem to be missing. I can dig out the original version and email it to you if you like? And maybe I should do another blog post about with which includes the pattern. Thanks for drawing my attention to this…
Frances says
Thank you! I tracked it down via Ravelry and there is a bit of autumnal interest in it at the moment, so if an updated note on the pattern page about the blog is possible, that will be appreciated by fans of stranded knitting.
Frances says
Hi again, I see that you have managed to track the pattern down. Is it possible to send the pattern to my email as well? It is a beautiful snowy day and perfect for a special cowl. Hoping that you are staying warm and safe, many thanks in advance!
Laura says
I am struggling to find the pattern in Hobbycraft, it’s stunning and was going to attempt fair isle for the first time (my challenge this year is to learn new knitting skills each month).
Karen says
Hi! These are the most beautiful knitted leaves I have ever seen! I am not a cowl person, but I would love to knit a sweater with your leaves. I also found only the small chart on the Hobbycraft site, which does not seem to give the full repeat?
Thank you so much for your creativity!
Karen

Hi again!
I feel like you may have thought me rude when I said that I wasn’t a cowl person, and here you are with such beautiful patterns for them! It’s only because I suffer from daily headaches and weekly migraines, and anything touching higher than the very base of my neck or throat triggers an attack.
very best wishes,
Karen

Hi!
Thanks to Covid lockdown, I’ve knitted a lot from my sock yarn stash, and I was excited to find your gorgeous pattern by way of Ravelry, since I had a four-ply, tweedy, variegated sock yarn that was far too pretty to turn into socks. I hoped it would turn out to still fit my neck when sized down to 3.5 mm needles, and it does. Or at least the ribbing does. I’m hoping to have a companion for autumn and winter parkas with a lot of bulky collars and hoods that get in the way of a scarf, shawl or larger cowl. So here I am, ten rows into the ribbing border and hoping that you still have the chart available as a PDF somewhere, as I’ve searched in vain for an e-mail address on the hobbycraft website so I could alert them to the missing chart.
With best wishes and hopes that you’ve managed to stay healthy,
Elisabeth
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Elisabeth, I’m sure I do, but the pesky kids are on the laptop right now. I’ll dig it out in a bit if that’s OK. If I forget, PLEASE REMIND ME!
Elisabeth says
Reminding you now 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Elisabeth. My filter directed your latest comment to my spam folder – how VERY rude of it! I’ve just emailed you the pattern. Apologies for the delay. Px

Hi again Phil,
I hope you are well!
Were you able to find your PDF of the chart for the falling leaves pattern? I am so much love to have it, and am more than happy to pay for it, as I think it it absolutely gorgeous.
Please take care of yourself,
Karen in Australia

hi Phil, just found your blog and fell in love with the falling leaves cowl. The chart I found on Hobbycraft doesn’t seem to be the entire width, would love to have a copy and pay for the pattern and/or make a donation to your dance fund.
Your blog makes me smile, only wish I had found it sooner! take care of yourself

The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Debbie, I’d be more than happy to email the chart to you. No payment needed! If you could let me know your email address, I’ll send it. You can contact me at thetwistedyarn@outlook.com
Best wishes, Phil.

Hi, just found your blog and I love your gorgeous creations. I’d love to make this cowl but i cant find the chart on hobbycraft. Can you email it to me? or link another website you post it on? thank you
Tanya Swinfen-Wilkes says
Hi! I have the same problem as the writers above. Found your gorgeous cowl pattern on Hobbycraft, but no chart attached. I tried zooming in on the mini one but it just blurs it. Please, please may I have a copy of the pattern and amounts of yarn needed. I DON’T think turquoise is included, despite what Hobbycraft says!! 😅
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Tanya, I’ve just sent you an email with the chart, divided into two parts. Hope it works ok! Phil x
Judith says
Hi, I know I’m (very) late to the party, but I’ve only just found your blog…. this cowl looks stunning – would it be possible to send the chart on to me please?
Either that, or sweet talk Hobbycraft to finally fix their page?
Many thanks, in advance,
Jude

I adore your designs! I was so thrilled to see this one this morning! However your pattern link no longer goes anywhere. I wonder, could you post a new link! I would love to make this cowl for myself! Autumn is kinda my thing lol!
Thank you for your lovely patterns!
Joanie
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Joanie, and HUGE apologies for slow response. I’ve been hiding under a rock and not doing much bloggy stuff. Anyway, there’s a link to the pattern at the end of this blog post here, which should work. Let me know if there’s a problem of course.

Thanks, I’ve been looking for this for a long time
