OK, before we get on to tonight’s post proper, here’s a peek at a bit of the afghan WIP:-
When it’s done, I’ll buy y’all a drink to say thank you for your encouragement. And I probably won’t crochet any more afghans for a wee while… although some even crazier projects are in the mental pipeline.
Anyway, this is mostly a piece about yarn-bombing. Because as I’ve posted before, plans have been afoot to yarn-bomb the house. And I had a little reminder to get on with it the other day, when out wandering in the village with the toddler twinnage. Last year our village was beautifully yarn-bombed (no, not by me.) Road signs, bus stops, barriers – all were fair game. Sadly some of it has gone, but we came across this bit that I’d not noticed before:-
Pretty funky, no? Someone has a goodish stash of fetching yarn, and the inspiration to use it. So this was a prompt to get on with my own project – yarn-bombing the railings of the balcony half-way up our tower. The yarn has arrived. (Yes, I’m still having a bit of a rainbow moment.)
And unbeknownst to the stoic spouse, I’ve started knitting long strips that will be sewn in place around the railings of the balcony. First some red:-
Then some orange:-
Sadly, I then ran out of time. But I’m on my way. Photos to follow…. shortly before the neighbours sue me for lowering the tone of the neighbourhood.

The afghan looks amazing – you crochet so very neatly – I shall keep mine under wraps I think 🙂
Given your season and weather I think your yarn bombing project will lighten and brighten the neighbourhood – it might catch on and everyone’s railing will be rainbow coloured!!
The Twisted Yarn says
Noooooooo, don’t keep yours under wraps!! Please! Shall I post a photo of mine showing all the messy, uneven bits?

So excited for your yarn bombing – and as for spouse … We won’t tell if you don’t!
The Twisted Yarn says
*whispers* He’s going away this weekend. And even though he’s walked into the room and seen me knitting these long colourful strips, he hasn’t asked what they’re for. Tee hee.
Allison says
I have seen a few instances of yarnbombing look slightly mad, but if you have a cohesive color scheme I can’t see it going wrong 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Slightly mad is good. 🙂
bembeezled says
Wow! That afghan looks awesome! Good look with the yarn bombing! 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you, on both counts.
bamcrafts979 says
That afghan looks AMAZING! Have you started sewing the ends in yet? The thought of you leaving it to the end makes my brain hurt!
BTW the weirdest yarn-bombed thing I’ve seen pictures of was a row of urinals. Now that is mad yarn-bombing!
The Twisted Yarn says
Oh wow! You realize I’m going to have to Google ‘yarn-bombed urinals’ now?! This may end badly…
bamcrafts979 says
I’ll take pity on you then. theknittingneurotic found it – here’s the link to her blog entry http://theknittingneuortic.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/urine-for-a-surprise/
KerryCan says
Just how big is that afghan going to be? Or is it still in its growth stage? The yarn bombing sounds like an adventure worth having!
The Twisted Yarn says
Big. Very big. More than two metres across, I suspect. It’s already annoyingly heavy.
mollieandclaire says
The Afghan looks amazing! And I can’t wait to see the pix of the yarn bombing!
The Twisted Yarn says
Soon…..

I am so pleased to read my blog which read me to read yours! Fantastic – I want my blog to be as wonderful as yours! The Afgahn looks amazing , if huge, and I love the way you take your knitting along in a bag even to a field. I have a feeling I am going to be spending a while going back through your posts when I should be hooking my meagre yarn bag! Great job!
thespid says
wish I’d not made all the typos, sorry.
Missy's Crafty Mess says
I love it. It’s coming a long beautifully.

Thank you.

The afghan looks incredible , the colours against the black are so vibrant. The tension too looks spot on, just stunning.
Will watch your yarn bombing with much interest, love the whole idea of it. Great colour choice too. Do you think we love the vibrant colours so much at the moment as the sky seems to be mostly grey?
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. And yes, I think you’re right about being drawn to vibrant colours when everything is so dull and grey.
I love the photos of your mood afghan that you’ve been posting.
joknit says
So excited about the yarn bombing, so looking forward to seeing the final result!
The Twisted Yarn says
So am I! Will have to sneak out at midnight to sew it all into place…
weekend knitter says
Beautifully colored afghan! And I want to yarn bomb the school I work at so bad!! Not sure I can sneak that past the principal though…Good luck getting it past the hubby! 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Oh you must! You must! That would be so cool.
lucyannluna says
Your afghan is wonderful. Good luck with the yarn bombing, all we need is some dry days to put it up. No sign of that yet, the black thorn is out here so a little more bad weather to come, but on the bright side winters not done until the black thorns flowered, & it didn’t flower until April last year!
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you.
I don’t think the natural world knows what the season is at the moment. It feels as though we haven’t had a proper winter… yet. I haven’t noticed any blackthorn flowering round here, but will keep my eye out.
annie says
What is blackthorn? I’ll have to google it. Love that afghan! It really should win a prize in some contest. It’s so well done and so attractive. I do agree that we need bright beautiful colours to combat the dreariness of winter, so you’ve done us all good with your creation — thank you. 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Blackthorn: sloe bushes, which have beautiful white flowers in spring contrasting with stark black twigs. Very pretty.
annie says
Thank you. Just haven’t had time to google it, but I still will so that I can see it.
annie says
I finally googled this. It is very pretty. ?
The Twisted Yarn says
Yup. There’s lots of it round here at the moment.
annie says
Ooooooh—- flowers in March. I’m jealous. We have SNOW. Ah well. We can’t have everything.
waywardleaf says
If I had a tower in my house, I would definitely yarn bomb it too 🙂 Looking forward to seeing the pics!
The Twisted Yarn says
Ha ha. We like to be a tiny bit crazy round here.
Captain Erratic says
Cheers for rainbows! I love the afghan and cant wait to see it finished. I went on a rainbow kick myself. Started making rainbow Granny squares for a big blanket and rainbow head bands haha its like once you open the rainbow door theres no going back.
I bet everyone will love the yarnbombing 😉
The Twisted Yarn says
Ooh, I love the sound of the rainbow granny blanket. Pictures??????? Please?
Captain Erratic says
Oh yes! I’ll do that. I’ll hopefully take some later today and post it with the pattern link 🙂
annabellefranklinauthor says
If you yarn-bomb your village with the same lovely luminous colours you’ve used in your afghan, it will be a happy place indeed!
The Twisted Yarn says
I hope so. 🙂
epicyarns says
Love love love the afghan! Can’t wait to see the yarn bomb too, I love a rainbow 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you.
Áine says
I so want that afghan! I am really really drawn to it every time I see it! I’m thinking either working through the jewel colour spectrum or really fiery colours. Though the jewel colours are winning out 🙂 Well done it looks amazing!
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. I think your idea of working through jewel colours is amazing. Are you going to do it? Pleeeease do it! (And post lots of gorgeous photos, obviously.)
Áine says
I’m seriously considering it! I thimk it’s gorgeous! It would probably take me forever! I’ve a few throws to do, a counterpane for my Mum and a granny square for my sister (both haven’t even been started yet!) then I think I’ll do it. Each time I see yours I want to do more! I’ve even thought of the yarn I’d like! 🙂
The Twisted Yarn says
So much knitting/crochet, so little time…. *Sighs*
Carole says
Your afghan is looking stunning. Do you have much more to go?
Love the colours you’ve chosen for the yarn bombing. Can’t wait to see pics of it.
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. I think I’m about 70% done…
youngatfifty says
wonderful to see your amazing afghan growing and growing 😉 Admire your patience. Aha !!! atlast your railings are going to be bombed in colours 😉 Cant wait to see it. You plan to leave it till they fall apart or you are going to recycle them ???
The Twisted Yarn says
I daren’t leave them up too long but I could find somewhere pretty in the village to attach them afterwards.
Knitting Mantra says
