I’ve been in a bit of a frenzy to finish designing and making the fiery sunset cowl, since so many of you said such kind things about it. I knitted round, and round, and round, so very fast that I was almost flung backwards across the room by the centrifugal forces.
Anyway. It’s done. And I’ve typed up the pattern for you.
But first, a message. Mother Twisted was enormously touched by all your lovely comments about her cathedral window quilting, and she sends you heartfelt thanks. I think she’s still blushing, even now. If you haven’t seen her needlework yet, do take a look, here.
Meanwhile, we have a cowl. Thank you for your name ideas. I’ve decided to go with Louisette’s suggestion of ‘The Hiking Reindeer’.
All this sunsetty stitchery was designed to show off the fiery colours in the new shade of sock yarn in the Head Over Heels range from Stylecraft. The shade is called ‘Etna’.
Amazingly, you only need one ball of ‘Etna’ and one ball of black 4-ply/fingering/sock-weight yarn to make this cowl. If you’re used to stranded knitting and working in-the-round, you’ll be able to knit this up in two shakes of a reindeer’s tail.
So would you like the pattern, for free? Oh all right, then. Here it is: just click on the link below.
Enjoy!
(And thank you to Stylecraft for providing the yarn. 🙂 )
Julia Stratford-Wright says
This is so beautiful!! I love the colours too. I can see I’ll be making a second cowl designed by you very shortly!
Could I please ask another question whilst I’m here? The leaves cowl pattern on the Hobby Craft site is very hard to follow because the charts just don’t print off to a good quality from their website. I would love to make it but wondered if there’s anyway round the problem?
I’m new here although I’ve been lurking! Love your work.
The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. You’re very kind! I could email the pattern charts to the email address you left for this comment, if that would help?
The Twisted Yarn says
Or maybe I should publish a post about it here. 🙂
Alison says
Hi, I’ve just come across the beautiful cowl and would love to attempt it but it seems the yarn has been discontinued. Do you have any suggestions for another yarn please?
Julia says
Just realised you replied! I would love to see the charts however you decide to do it! Clearly, email would be my first choice as I don’t seem to be alerted when you reply to my comment here. Must be something that needs tweaking in the dreaded ‘settings’ which I avoid. Loving your moose in the crochet version!
Alice Tomarin says
Hi I love the hiking reindeer cowl and have searching for the pattern but I haven’t been able to find it. It’s beautiful! I would love to make it for my daughters. Is there anyway I can get the pattern? Thank you so much. Alice
Catherine Jenkins says
Alice – the link is on the blog post above / or click here https://thetwistedyarn.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/The-Hiking-Reindeer-Cowl.pdf
Elissa says
I get error 404 when clicking link to the cowl pattern. Could you email the pattern and a substitute for the colored yarn? So want to make this and thank you!
pauline says
I get an error message too! And I would like to have the pattern .
Caroline says
It’s really stunning! Thank you muchly for the pattern, if I feel brave enough, I would love to give it a go ?

So wonderfully beautiful! Thank you so much.
Liz Buxton says
It’s amazing! – would make a great design for socks or leg-warmers too. The yarn is perfect for a sunset scene.
Congratulations also to Mother Twisted, her cathedral window cushion is stunning, you are both so gifted.

The Twisted Yarn says
Thank you. And yes, I have been pondering using the design elsewhere too. It’s gorgeous yarn.
My mum is a very modest and reserved person, but I know that she has been quietly appreciating the kind words from so many different people on here.
Anna says
Wow! I love this. I wish I could knit 🙁 maybe someone clever could make this into a crochet pattern!?
The Twisted Yarn says
Hmm, I could… maybe… Um, how patient are you?
Anna says
I’ll wait forever! ?
captelaine says
I searched for this yarn, but that color isn’t available anywhere I could find 🙁 Thanks for the pattern, I’ll hang onto it, maybe I’ll come across a suitable yarn someday to use the… You are so generous to share it with us. Thank you very much.
The Twisted Yarn says
Given your artistic ability, I’m VERY honoured by your comment! As for the yarn, it seems that it’s not widely available from suppliers who ship worldwide YET, but as it’s only just been released, I’m sure it will be available soon. Retailers such as Deramores who ship worldwide do stock the other shades in this yarn, so presumably they’ll start offering ‘Etna’ too, soon. If they don’t, I’ll speak to the folk at Stylecraft and ask what’s going on!
Carolyn Meyer says
Love your pattern, thanks so much. I checked the Deramores website but “Etna” is not available. Hope you will be able to help us with this. Otherwise is there a possible other yarn that would be close in color?
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Carolyn, and thanks for your question.
‘Etna’ was only released about a week or so ago, so my assumption is that it’s just taking a teeny bit of time to filter into all the retailers’ stock. I notice that Black Sheep Wools are now stocking it, and they do ship worldwide. http://www.blacksheepwools.com/stylecraft-head-over-heels-etna-3104-head-over-heels.html I assume that other retailers will follow shortly. Hope this helps!

This is probably the most stunning piece of colorwork I’ve seen! I’ve done color work before so I understand the attention to detail it takes. Wonderful job!

That really is a very generous comment – thank you.

Years ago, I tried a pattern that involved carried color, and it was such an awful experience that I never wanted to try again–until I saw this cowl!!! This makes me think of a set of jewelry my grandmother got YEARS ago along old route 66 going to California. It was painted on butterfly wings and put under domed glass to magnify the beauty. She bought the pine tree design which is hard to find, but eBay had some examples. They even had some with a stag deer!!! You can see these at:

Oh wow, stunning!
And thank you for such a thoughtful comment.
Carolyn says
What a lovely pattern, and so generous of you to give it to us! It sure makes a wonderful sunset picture.
Maryjo says
I’ve printed the pattern but cannot get the chart – gives me a blank page. The Hiking Reindeer is a lovely pattern and I would love to make this
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Mary Jo,
Hmm, very strange. I’m sorry to hear that this has happened. I’m not very good at techie stuff, but I wonder whether it’s connected to the fact that I’ve set the margins on the page quite narrow. Maybe this is upsetting your computer and/or printer? Let me know if you’d like me to email it to you instead. And if you’re in the UK, there’s always post!
pippa says
This pattern is just amazing – I will get it done as soon as I find the yarn, and it’s going to be my “show and tell” at Meg Swanson’s Knitting Camp in July.
mariposaknits says
I love this cowl!! That colorway is perfect for sunset.

I love the reindeer cowl, especially as I live at the foot f the White Mountains in Maine. You are truly talented! I crochet and really appreciate it when knitters convert their patterns for crochet. I aspire to be like you. Dianne

This is my project for the quiet days between Xmas and New Year (I hope) … thank you so much.
Did you start the Etna ball from the outside or the centre? Just thinking the blue of the sky may be misplaced if I get that wrong …
Zoe Kingson says
This is one of the most beautiful knitting things I’ve ever seen! I had to immediately go buy the Stylecraft yarn and will definitely be knitting this for myself. Thank you so much for the free pattern.
Patti Martinez says
I would really like to try knitting The Hiking Reindeer cowl. Thank you for the pattern. I’ve been looking for the Stylecraft Head Over Heels sock yarn in shade ‘Etna’ and I can’t seem to locate a seller. Can you help me?
Thank you.
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Patti, Unfortunately Stylecraft have discontinued the original range of Head Over Heels colourways. I don’t immediately know of an alternative sock yarn that would work, but if you search lots of multicoloured sock yarns, you’ll probably find something. I’m sorry not to be able to give a more helpful answer!
Margaret Franco says
Oh my goodness, I know I’m late to the party, but I just found your beautiful pattern. I have a cousin that lives in northern Idaho. They take their 3 children (5, 10 and 12) hiking in all the local mountains. His wife often takes these kids into the back country by herself. It is truly amazing! This pattern will the absolute best gift for them! Thank you so much for making this and offering it for free. I can’t wait to get some painted yarn and start on this project right away.. Stay safe and healthy.
barakiss says
I think your designs are gorgeous but nowhere can I find instructions for them. I should be seeing a chart somewhere.
flyovercindy says
You are a super-star! I just now found your beautiful pattern – the prettiest cowl I’ve ever seen.
Thank you!!!
The Twisted Yarn says
And the kindest comment I’ve ever read! Thank you.
Christine Malpas says
I love the hiking reindeer cowl, but unfortunately am having trouble follow the chart. Is there any chance of having the stitch by stitch version instead? I would be forever grateful. Many thanks.
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Christine, and thanks for your interest in the pattern. I’m sure we can figure something out. Would you mind emailing me at thetwistedyarn@outlook.com so that I can send you material? Px
Manon Long says
Is there any way to have this pattern “reversed” in color? So that the black on chart would be “in color” and the colored ones on chart could be black? I am seriously confusing myself, being that the black is the color, and vice versa…. am I the only one struggling? I’ve had to un-do WHOLE rowd several times now, and dang that’s al lot of stitches to be ripping out…thanks
Ingrid Williamson says
Sad to read the Etna colour is no longer as I love the pattern and the wool. Am desperately searching for an alternative 🤔
lmickelb says
I, too, love this pattern – you have such a gift! If you know of any alternative to the discontinued Etna yarn, I’d love to hear about it!
Tina Warner says
I love this pattern but do no knit. Is there a crochet version?
Adrienne Blaquiere says
Have you done this design on anything other than a cowl? It seems such a shame not to show it properly, and a cowl is designed to crumple up and will hide all the detail. I do want to make it and I’m currently searching for the right kind of sunsetty colour combination since that particular wool seems unavailable these days!
AB says
I made this and definitely used two sock wools and the right size of needle, but found it came out wider than expected (yes, I know I should have done a swatch….). Therefore I ran out of wool and had to make it shorter. This meant that the cowl, while nice and still usable, is shorter than it is wide, and the tendency is for the inside to show while it is being worn. I am very proud of my stranded work, though – much better than I expected (but the intarsia for the bird was messy 😦 ). I am considering making it as the bottom of a sweater, if I can find a pattern for a knit-in-the-round sweater for this weight of wool, as it seems a shame to do all that work then have the picture crumpled up when it’s worn.
Maureen Seydel says
Hi-
I love this pattern and think it’s just gorgeous. I found it on Ravelry so thank you for allowing us to download it for free. Is the chart available in a written format as I am having trouble reading the chart and would be ecstatic if I could get a written pattern.
Thanks so much!
Maureen
The Twisted Yarn says
Hi Maureen, huge apologies but it’s not available in a written format at the moment. If I get a moment I’ll have a go at doing this…
